THE TOWNLAND OF AUGHLISH

The townland of Aughlish is in the parish of Ballymore in Armagh County. It
is labelled number 3 on the map. J056438

    “In the townland of Aughlish, near the north west point
    on the roadfrom Tanderagee to Loughbrickland, is the site of an old church,
    a portion of the ruins of which are still visible. There are 2 circular burying
    grounds attached to it, having the appearance of Danish forts: one called
    Ballynaback is used exclusively by Protestants, the other called Relicairn
    is devoted to Catholics. In this latter they show a tomb or rather walls where
    they say the famous robber Redmond O’Hanlon was buried.” (Ordnance
    Survey Memoirs 1835-38
    )

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

    Rath of the Early Christian Period.
    SMR NO: ARM 018:004
    Irish Grid Reference: J05154250
    Townland: AUGHLISH
    CONDITION: some remains
    The large circular earthwork over 50m in diam. shown on the 1835 &’63 OS 6″ maps is barely recognisable, but although it has been levelled & cultivated, the outline can still be seen. A level, circular platform 42m N-S & 43m E-W is raised no more than 0.6m above the natural ground level on the S side & appears to be sunk into the hillslope on the N. It is bounded by a ditch c.10m wide & c.0.1 m deep below the surrounding ground level.
