    MEGALITHIC/NEOLITHIC passage tomb

    Irish Grid Reference: H91413974
Sitename: VICAR’S CAIRN, VICER’S CARN, THE MONK’S CAIRN, CARNAVANAGHAN, CAIRNAMNHANAGHAN, CARN-NA-VANACHAN, VICAR’S CARN
    Townland: CARNAVANAGHAN
    CONDITION: some remains
The cairn still survives to a height of over 4m on the S, but most of the N has been removed & the present diam. of 32.5m need bear little relation ship to the original size. The kerb & decorated stones mentioned in various sources cannot now be identified. It is possible that part of a passage or chamber was uncovered in 1785 when a Mr McCarrol found “a door case” & a “wall situated E & W on either side” which he followed for 3m. In 1815 “a wide passage” was opened through the site. See SM7 file for details.
