Clady Beg

THE TOWNLAND OF CLADY BEG

The townland of Clady Beg is in the parish of Kilclooney in Armagh County.
It is labelled number 8 on the map.

The 1826 Schools Commission report describes the school in the townland:

“Tullywill, Cladybeg – A pay school under the care of John McCormick,
of the Roman Catholic denomination, who was in receipt of 11l per annum. The
school was being held in a thatched cabin but a new school house had been constructed.
The school educated 40 scholars.”

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

    Cairn of prehistoric period.
    SMR NO: ARM 021:041
    Irish Grid Reference: H934321
    Sitename: THE GREEN HEIGHT
    Townland: CLADY BEG
    CONDITION: destroyed
Paterson recorded that “the Green Height” in this townland was reputedly the site of a cairn, taken away by the Synott family when building Ballymoyer House. There was also a tradition that a line (or lines) of boulders ran NW-SE S of the cairn, and these were removed at the same time. The cairn site cannot now be located, but it probably stood on or near the summit of “Carn Hill” at the grid reference given below. Bonfires were apparently lit at the cairn on mid-summers eve until c.1880.
