THE TOWNLAND OF CLOGHOGE

The townland of Cloghoge is in the parish of Ballymore in Armagh County. It
is labelled number 15 on the map.

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

Rath of the Early Christian Period.
    SMR NO: ARM 018:001
    Irish Grid Reference: J02494264
    Townland: CLOGHOGE
    CONDITION: traces only
The site has been recently levelled & only a low, circular platform raised c. O.6m above the general ground ievel survives. It measures 38.5m N-S x 37.5m E-W & is defined by a gentle scarp. Field notes from the 1 960s describe a banked enclosure 42m N-S x 40.5m E-W. The bank rose O.9m above the interior & fell c.2.1m to the base of an extermal ditch, preserved on the S side of the site. The bank was interrupted by at least 5 modern gaps and recent field boundaries had encroached on the perimeter.

Rath of the Early Christian Period.
    SMR NO: ARM 018:002
    Irish Grid Reference: J03124272
    Townland: CLOGHOGE
    CONDITION: traces only
A small oval enclosure 33m N-S x 25m E-W is preserved by incorporation in to the recent field patterns. On the NW, W & S sides it is defined by a low bank, 2.5m wide & 0.75m high, surmounted by a hedge. The interior is level with the external ground surface, but on the E side, no bank survives & there is simply a steep scarp falling c.1.8m to the base of a recut ditch 1.5m wide & 0.5m deep. It is possible that erosion removed the E perimeter but the outline today is much as it appears on the 1835 & 1863 OS 6″ maps.

Rath of the Early Christian Period.
    SMR NO: ARM 018:033
    Irish Grid Reference: J03094225
    Townland: CLOGHOGE
    CONDITION: substantial remains
A roughly circular earthwork 51 m N-S x 56m E-W. Most of the perimeter is clearly visible below a hedge, but part of the SE side has been removed. The site was most vulnerable on the SW & around this side is a earth & clay bank 4m wide & 2.1m high above the interior. Earlier field notes suggest an external ditch 5.5m wide, but this is barely discernable. The bank becomes less pronounced to the N. Within the enclosure is a low mound O.9m high x 33m diam. See SM7 file for further details.

    Enclosure of uncertain period
    SMR NO: ARM 018:034
    Irish Grid Reference: J04574189
    Townland: CLOGHOGE
    CONDITION: No visible remains
The OS 6″ map of 1835 indicates a “Fort” in the vicinity of a small settlement. A circular earthwork c.35m in diam. is shown on the map of 1863 with buildings impinging on the perimeter on the N. The site was in gentle S-facing grassland above a slope which fell away more steeply to the S & E. There are No visible remains.
