THE TOWNLAND OF CREGGAN UPPER

The townland of Creggan Upper is in the parish of Loughgilly in Armagh County.
It is not shown on the map.

The 1826 Schools Commission report describes the school in the townland:

“Upper Cregins – A pay school under the care of Robert Boyd,
of the Church of Ireland denomination, who was in receipt of 10l per annum.
A total of 25 scholars were educated in a barn.”

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

CONDITION: No visible remains
A small, almost triangular “Fort” c.35m across is recorded on the 1835 OS 6″ map. The map of 1863 shows only a pecked circle & indicates a “Site of Fort”. The monument has been completely ploughed out & only a faint platform can be identified. It was situated on a gentle SE-facing slope above a natural scarp which falls steeply to a small stream which also forms the townland boundary. It commanded a good view over the valley to the SE.
