THE TOWNLAND OF CRUNAGH
The townland of Crunagh is in the parish of Loughgilly in Armagh County. It
is labelled number 18 on the map.
The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

CONDITION: traces only
The site has been levelled & ploughed but a low, roughly circular platform 34m N-S & 38.9m E-W remains. The W perimeter is visible only as a gentle scarp falling 0.6m to outer ground level, but around E a more pronounced scarp has been preserved by incorporation into a field boundary. Here the interior is raised c.1.7m above the base of a shallow ditch 3.5-4m wide & cO.8m deep. Traces of a silted up ditch can be seen on S side. The interior has a slightly dished profile & slopes down to E.

CONDITION: some remains
A roughly circular earthwork 49m N-S x47.5 E-W, enclosed by a well defined bank. This stands c1.8m above the interior at SW, becoming lower to S where it is 0.75m high. There are irregularities on E side, associated with the adjacent farmstead, but a break in the bank at SE may mark an original entrance. On N & W there is a formidable ditch up to 3.3m deep below the top of the bank, 1.5m below the exterior & 5.5m wide. No ditch survives on E side, & only traces can be seen on S. CONDITION: No visible remains
A short portion of a small “Fort” is shown on the OS 6″ map of 1835, incorporated into an irregular polygonal enclosure. Only a “Site of Fort” is shown on the 1863 map, and there are now no visible remains. The site was located on a gentle S-facing slope with very good views to the SW & W although it is overlooked by higher ground to the N.
