THE TOWNLAND OF EDENKNAPPAGH

The townland of Edenknappagh is in the parish of Kildarton in Armagh County.
It is labelled number 11 on the map.

Paterson (Armachiana, Vol. 16) notes:

    Edenknappagh. ‘Hill brow of the tummocks’. Cnap (pronounced knap) literally
    means an knob or lump of anything, but in its secondary sense is applied to
    small round hills and gives name in various combinations to many places. It
    appears also as Knappagh, meaning a place of knobs or hillocks, a form to
    be found in the parish of Eglish some four miles from Armagh. (p.23)

The 1826 Schools Commission report describes the school in the townland:

“Edennappagh – A pay school under the care of John Lynn, of the
Presbyterian denomination, who was in receipt of 2.5d per week. The number of
scholars is not stated. “
