THE TOWNLAND OF LISDRUMCHOR LOWER
The townland of Lisdrumchor Lower is in the parish of Loughgilly in Armagh
County. It is labelled number 34 on the map.
The 1826 Schools Commission report describes two school in Lisdrumwher which
may be Lisdrumchor:
“Lisdrumwher – A pay school under the care of Robert Davison,
of the Presbyterian denomination. The income of the master was not fixed at
that point as the school had yet to be officially opened. The salary and an
acre of land were to be granted by a Dr.Stewart….
” Lisdrumwher – A pay school under the care of George Allen, who was in
receipt of 19l per annum. The school was conducted in a barn but the number
of scholars was not recorded.”
The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

CONDITION: some remains
The site measures 40m N-S x42.5m E-W & is enclosed by a bank c.1 m above the interior. Beyond the bank on S side is a short portion of ditch 1.2m deep below the top of the bank, 0.6m below the outer ground level & 3.5m wide. This is disturbed on E, but to N a more impressive ditch has survived 4m wide, 0.75m deep & 2.8m below the top of the bank. The owner also has a cross inscribed pillar in his garden which came from the grounds of the Burrendale Hotel, Newcastle. See SM7 & SM8 files for further details.
