THE TOWNLAND OF SHANEGLISH

The townland of Shaneglish is in the parish of Ballymore in Armagh County.
It is labelled number 41 on the map.

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

Rath of the Early Christian Period.
    SMR NO: ARM 018:006
    Irish Grid Reference: J05264181
    Townland: SHANEGLISH
    CONDITION: TRACES ONLY
A small roughly circular “Fort” c.30m diam. is shown on the 1835 OS 6″map. On the 1863 edition a larger earthwork, c.40m is shown. The monument has largely been removed to make way for modern farm buildings. Only a short length of the perimeter bank on the W has survived, but this is still quite substantial, c.5m wide, 1.7m above the interior & 2.4m above the outer ground level. A much silted external ditch, 3-4m wide & largely over grown on the SW can also be identified.

Rath of the Early Christian Period.
    SMR NO: ARM 018:007
    Irish Grid Reference: J03234115
    Townland: SHANEGLISH
    CONDITION: No visible remains
A circular “Fort” c.30m in diam. is shown on the 1835 OS 6″ map, but by the time of the 1863 edition, it was reduced to “Site of Fort”. It was located on quite a steep E-facing slope above a small stream which forms the townland boundary but nothing is visible except for a hint of a circular crop mark indicated a filled-in ditch.

Church and graveyard of the Post-medieval Period
    SMR NO: ARM 018:038
    Irish Grid Reference: J04224191
    Sitename: LESSENEGLOISE
    Townland: SHANEGLISH
    CONDITION: No visible remains
The name Shaneglish (old church) suggests that there may have been an early ecclesiastical site within the townland, but there are No visible remains & no known documentary references. There is, however, a strong local tradition of a graveyard & this may be a pointer to an early church site. The traditional graveyard is located on the relatively flat summit of a hill with excellent views S, E & NE, but there are no visible remains. BIBLIOGRAPHY:
